Going Global: A Path to Growth in the New Decade

A light rain began to fall as eggs and sausages were being served on crisp white linen tablecloths in the cozy confines of the Albemarle Room at the Marriott Fairview Park. Coffee chatter was in abundance as executives gathered on April 21st to exchange perspectives on Going Global. Organized by the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce International Business Council, the gathering was a local who’s who of international business experts, sharing anecdotes, tips and experience.

Executives from Tata Communications, ICF International, U.S. Export Assistance Center and other industry experts shared their experience and provided insight for critical preparation strategies.

Summit with Suzhou Leaders on Doing Business in China

Over 200 professionals, business leaders, state and local government turned out to hear some GOOD NEWS about international cooperation. The Maryland-China business connection is a success story that will sail through these tough economic storms. This message was loud and clear to the assembled: Opportunities are in the wind and the Suzhou leadership has a vision for their future.

The delegation of 15 senior leaders from Suzhou City dropped by Montgomery County on their tour of the US.

MCBC was well-represented. Our own President Steve Drake got a chance to reinforce the MCBC message with DBED’s Managing Director of International Investment & Trade Bob Walker and Maryland Secretary of State John McDonough.

During its 14th Annual Chinese New Year Banquet, MCBC honored two of Maryland’s most significant contributors to the state’s relationship with China with lifetime memberships. Former Maryland Governor and Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer and longtime MCBC member Jean Van Buskirk received the honors from MCBC Chairman Emeritus Clay Hickson in recognition of their early pioneering work in Maryland-China relations, their establishment of Maryland’s sister state and cities programs, and their influence on the establishment and growth of MCBC.

As Governor Schaefer was unable to attend the event, Ms. Van Buskirk received his award on his behalf, regaling banquet attendees with stories of his early trips to China during which she accompanied the Governor and his delegation. She was then surprised with the presentation of the same award to her.

Congratulations Governor Schaefer and Jean Van Buskirk!
