During its 14th Annual Chinese New Year Banquet, MCBC honored two of Maryland’s most significant contributors to the state’s relationship with China with lifetime memberships. Former Maryland Governor and Baltimore Mayor William Donald Schaefer and longtime MCBC member Jean Van Buskirk received the honors from MCBC Chairman Emeritus Clay Hickson in recognition of their early pioneering work in Maryland-China relations, their establishment of Maryland’s sister state and cities programs, and their influence on the establishment and growth of MCBC.

As Governor Schaefer was unable to attend the event, Ms. Van Buskirk received his award on his behalf, regaling banquet attendees with stories of his early trips to China during which she accompanied the Governor and his delegation. She was then surprised with the presentation of the same award to her.
